We’re proud to have supported adults with learning disabilities for over 65years
Lambeth & Southwark Mencap’s origins go back to 1953. In those days there were very few support groups or services in existence for people with learning disabilities or their families. The need for change and wish to mix with others in a similar position in their community led to a group of families getting together.
Learning that they had similar experiences and desires for their children the group decided that they would work together for change. This drive for better services and mutual support prompted them to create an organisation that would campaign for improvement and at the same time provide the opportunity for ongoing support. This organisation expanded and evolved to become the charity that is Lambeth Mencap of today.
Lambeth & Southwark Mencap has played a key role in shaping the development of local services and this involvement in service planning remains an important element of our work.
In 1991 that our Executive Committee decided that Lambeth Mencap would start to provide direct services. Since then we have grown into a significant provider of high quality community-based services. Tailor made services that are regularly used by over 300 people in South London.
