Lambeth Mencap is an established voluntary organisation which provides a range of services to service users with learning disabilities and their families and carers.
Our History
Lambeth Mencap has a long history. Its origins go back to 1953. In those days there were very few services in existence for people with learning disabilities or their families. The families that got together then to set up our organisation did so for mutual support and to campaign for better services for their sons and daughters. Lambeth Mencap has developed and undergone many changes since it was first established, including changes to its name, but as an organisation we have played a key role in shaping the development of local services and this involvement in service planning remains an important element of our work.
In the early 1990’s, the people that were on our Executive Committee decided that Lambeth Mencap should also develop and provide services itself. Since then we have grown into a significant provider of community-based services, with the range of services that we operate today and that are used by over 250 people.
