Becky Loney gave a short presentation about Intensive Interaction

Intensive Interaction is an approach to communication for adults who have profound and multiple learning disabilities, and or those who have severe autism. The theory was developed from theories about how infants first begin to communicate with their parents or care givers: by watching, by observing, by playing safe, simple games, by turn-taking and mirroring activities, which become more sophisticated as the baby grows and develops.

It is a useful approach to use with people who are non-verbal, or pre-verbal – people who are totally reliant on others to interpret their communication needs. It is a way of nurturing people, and building on their strengths to encourage them to be more confident in communication, to enjoy sharing space and time with others, and to become more sociable over time. Intensive Interaction doesn’t need expensive equipment, or complicated guidelines for people to follow – it can be done anywhere and almost anytime. It just needs two people who are happy to share space – and a sensitive communication partner who can engage on an individual level with the person concerned, and really get to know them. Overall, it should be fun!
